16 Creative Ways to Cook Frozen Wonton!

16 Creative Ways to Cook Frozen Wonton!

Wontons  also known as Wantan δΊ‘εž – are a versatile and delicious dish that can be enjoyed in numerous ways. From traditional boiled wontons in soup to creative twists like wonton tacos and Szechuan Spicy Wontons, there’s a method for every palate. Discover 16 enjoyable ways to prepare and savor this culinary favorite in my latest blog post! It has been a while since I last posted. 😁

Pan-fried dumpling
Pan-fried Wonton / Dumpling / Winged Gyoza

  1. Pan-Fried Wontons
    - Add oil on heated flat frying pan and pan-fry Wonton.
    - Pour a mixture of potato or corn flour and water into the frying pan with the Wonton. The mixture will become a crispy golden-brown layer like wings holding all the Wontons together.
    - Fry until golden and crispy. Takes lots of practice to perfect the wings of this dish. 😁
    - Serve with a sweet chilli sauce or a mixture of rice vinegar with soy sauce.

  2. Steamed Wontons
    - Unlike dumpling which has a firm shape, wonton is soft. To prevent them from lumping together after steaming, we have to put each wonton in a silicon cupcakes container. Refer to photo below.
    - Steam in a steamer for about 15min until cooked through.
    - Serve with a little side-dish of Chinese black vinegar  Zhenjiang black vinegar ιŽζ±Ÿι¦™ι†‹ with ginger strips for dipping.

  3. Wonton Soup
Boil in a chicken broth with leafy green vegetables like Caixin, mushrooms and fresh spring or fried onions.
    - Serve hot as a comforting soup.

  4. Deep-Fried / Air-fried Wontons
    • Deep-fry until golden brown and crispy. If you prefer the air-fry option, you may choose to air-fry the Wonton with 7 holes round silicon Air Fryer Cupcake Pan as seen in the photo above.
    • Serve with a sweet and sour dipping sauce.

  1. Wonton Noodle Soup πŸœ
Boil and serve with egg noodles in a flavorful broth.
Usually I pair Wontons with Yee mee 伊青 noodles, as the crispy texture gives a good contrast to the soft Wontan.
    - Garnish with fresh spring onions and a dash of sesame oil.

  2. Baked Wontons
    -
Line the baking tray with baking paper. Arrange the Wontons on it.
    - Brush Wontons with oil and bake in the oven for about15 mins (200°C) until crispy.
    - Serve with a side-bowl of Guacamole or Salsa.

  3. Wonton Chips
    Fry until crispy.
    - Serve with various dips like hummus, guacamole or sweet chili sauce.

  4. Wonton Salad
Boil or bake in the oven for about 15 mins (200°C) until cooked.
    - Serve on a bed of mixed greens with a dressing.
Try mixing grated yuzu, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, soy sauce and brown sugar for a zesty dressing. Let the mixture sit for about 10minutes before serving.

Wonton with Sesame Sauce - ate this at a restaurant in Singapore

  1. Sesame Sauce Wontons
    -
Air fry or deep fry Wonton.
    - Pour creamy sesame salad sauce over the Wonton. Creamy sesame salad sauce like Kewpie Roasted Sesame Dressing can be easily bought off the shelf.

  2. Stuffed Wonton Capsicum
Cut Capsicum into shapes like a cup, sprinkle some oil on it. And fill each with a boiled Wonton.
    - Line the baking tray with baking paper. Put stuffed capsicum on it.
    - Bake in pre-heated oven 220°C for about 10min until the Capsicums are tender.
    - Ideal as an appetizer or side dish.

  3. Wonton Hotpot / Steamboat / Shabu Shabu
    Boil Wonton until cooked.
    - Serve with desired dipping sauce.
My favorite steamboat dipping is chopped fresh chilli, garlic and soy dipping sauce with a dash of black vinegar. πŸ˜‹
  1. Mala Wonton (Szechuan Spicy)
    Boil Wonton and drain it.
    - Stir in a spoon of spicy chili crisp (i.e. Lao Gan Ma or Heng brand) and serve. Goes well with a bowl of white rice!

These cooking suggestions should provide a wide array of options to enjoy Wontons in different and delicious ways!

Salad

Feasting due to festivities often comes with an unwanted increase.. To counter the gain and guilt, I embarked on a diet on 2nd day of new year! Today I missed my breakfast. Instead of the usual Beef Hor Fun or Wanton Mee, I decided to settle for a bowl of salad for lunch. I've resigned to atone for my "sins" by munching plain veg like a cow for the next few weeks. But thank God, I chance upon this colorful salad stall at Amoy Street Food Market. Discovered that eating salad can be fun and economical too!
Roasted Pumpkin, Mushrooms, Sun-dried Tomatos, Pickled Onions

Cleanliness: 7 out of 10 (it's a hawker centre anyway)

Remarks:
Fresh greens with interesting variety of toppings. We shall never be bored to diet daily as the toppings are changed regularly.
The stallholders are pleasant, humble and helpful people. As it is a hawker centre, we might have to raise our voice to inform the vendor on the toppings you have chosen, especially during busy lunch hours.

Like Teochew porrridge, Rediffusion is enriching our lives and would be dearly missed if it is gone.  I wish the flavours of this station would be retained.

Keh Lapis

Agnes is a retired Peranakan nurse.

I love cooking exotic local food. As such, a good friend introduced me to his mother to learn baking Kek Lapis. Also known as Kueh Lapis, it is the famous multi-layered cake originated from Indonesia. I love this recipe as the ingredients can be found in most baking shops in Singapore and easy to prepare.

Recipe of Kek Lapis, coutesy of Auntie Agnes

Ingredients:
30 egg yolks
I can condensed milk
200g flour
200g sugar
2 tea spoon mixed spice powder (Lapis Cake Spice)
1 can Golden Churn butter
2 table spoon brandy

A. Mix the egg yolks and sugar together with mixer.
B. In a separate container, mix condensed milk and butter together.
C. Mix A and B together.

D. Sieve flour with spice powder.
E. Fold flour onto the mixture.
F. Pre heat oven for 10min at 130 degree Celsius.
G. Oil baking tray with butter. Put in baking paper.
H. Pour 1 cup mixture into baking tray.
I. Grill till brown at 180 degree celsius for about 2min (or bake till light brown)

J.Take out tray, press cake to remove air.

K. Pour in another cup of mixture. Put into oven and grill.
L. After the last layer is baked. Cover with alumimium foil and bake for 10min.

M. Take it out. Put over wire mess, flip it over and let it rest for about 10 min.
N. Cut Kek Lapis according to the lines imprinted by the wire mess.

Final product - Keh Lapis

It will be more moist after 24 hours of breathing outdoor. It can last for a few days without refrigeration. Once refrigerated, we need to consume it within 3 days, else it turns mouldy.
